AISI 316 (UNS S31600) and 316L (UNS S31603) are US steel grades, SUS 316 and SUS 316L are Japanese stainless steel grades. Because of the additional molybdenum in this steel, the overall performance of the steel is better than that of AISI 310 and AISI 304 stainless steel.
The two most common stainless steel grades are 304 and 316. The key difference is the addition of molybdenum, an alloy which drastically enhances corrosion resistance, especially for more saline or chloride-exposed environments. 316 stainless steel contains molybdenum, but 304 doesn’t.
AISI 316 stainless steel is suitable for cold working such as cold heading, cold drawn and cold riveting, but it is more difficult than carbon steel. Machining AISI 316 stainless steel (SS316) has higher strength and higher work hardening rate than carbon steel and low alloy steel, so it is more difficult to process.
Molybdenum is a chemical element used for the strengthening and hardening of steel. Its main function in stainless 316 is to help fight off corrosion from chlorides. Stainless 316 contains more nickel than stainless 304, while 304 contains more chromium than 316.
The primary difference between the two is the fact that stainless steel is a chromium based steel alloy, whereas mild steel is a carbon based steel alloy. Mild Steel is also known as carbon steel due to the fact that it contains between 0.05–0.25% carbon. Stainless Steel, on the other hand, contains a minimum of 10.5% chromium content by mass.

Stainless steel grade 316 (also known as 1.4401) is an austenitic grade of stainless steel second only to 304 in commercial importance. Initially developed for use in paper mills, 316 stainless steel is now typically used in food processing and brewery equipment, chemical/petrochemical equipment,
Grade 316 has virtually the same mechanical, physical and fabrication characteristics as 304 with better corrosion resistance, particularly to pitting corrosion in chloride environments. Grade 316 (UNS S31600) is the second most popular grade in the stainless steel family. It accounts for about 20% of all stainless steel produced. Composition
Nov 08, 2016 · Mild steel is a type of carbon steel with a low amount of carbon – it is actually also known as “low carbon steel.” Although ranges vary depending on the source, the amount of carbon typically found in mild steel is 0.05% to 0.25% by weight, whereas higher carbon steels are typically described as having a carbon content from 0.30% to 2.0%.

Nov 15, 2007 · It's common practice, at least in my experience, to use a buttering layer of filler material, eg 309SS, on the Carbon Steel and then to weld to the SS 316. Look also at "welding of stainless steel and other joining methods" NIDI pub no 9002, there is a chap on dissimilar welding.
